U.B. Student Association offers incentive to vote
As we reported, tomorrow is the last day to register to vote in the February seventh General Elections. But if you’re eighteen years old and have not been motivated enough to sign up, you might change your mind after hearing this offer. The University of Belize Association of Student Government has embarked on a nationwide registration campaign and is offering an incentive for young voters. Association President, Moses Sulph, explains how it works.

“We realise that the younger voters are not registered, the younger people within the population who are capable of voting aren’t registered. I believe the percentage from eighteen to thirty there are thirty-eight percent that is registered. Therefore, there is sixty-two percent unregistered. So what we are doing is we’re trying to let it known that it’s important to register and take part in the issues of your country. However, what we are doing, our target population right now is basically the students from the sixth forms and the university. We’re trying to give them also a incentive to register. It’s not a incentive because we want to give away money, it’s because we’re trying to get young people to register. It’s up to the politician to get them to vote, but we want to get them to register. So what you would do is if you attend any of the sixth forms or university it would give you a chance to partake in a raffle.”
First prize winner will receive a year free tuition to the student’s school plus five hundred dollars cash, while second prize is a semester paid and five hundred dollars. Third prize is a semester book scholarship and two hundred and fifty dollars. Students can take part in the raffle by taking their registration receipt to their school. Youths of voting age who don’t attend a tertiary level institution but would like to take part can also do so by taking their registration slips to the U.B. or junior college in their area.
