Caye Caulker will get first ever water system

The timing may be politically convenient but Government’s plans to open a new water treatment plant in Caye Caulker will significantly improve life on the island for its fifteen hundred residents and numerous visitors. According to a press release issued today, this morning Prime Minister Said Musa and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Belize Water Services Limited, Norris Hall, formally agreed to co-fund the project which is slated to cost two point three million dollars. G.O.B. will provide the bulk of the money while B.W.S.L. has committed to just over six hundred thousand dollars. The new reverse osmosis plant will provide potable water to replace the use of the island’s shallow wells, which can now be used only for washing and bathing. In addition to the water plant, the project includes a hundred thousand gallon storage tank and more than seven miles of pipeline designed to serve both sides of the island. Construction is expected to start this month and be completed in early 2009. Unlike the desalinisation facility opened in San Pedro, which is run by a private company, B.W.S.L. will manage the entire Caye Caulker water system.
