Veteran broadcaster Eustace Usher dies in Belmopan

Story PictureTonight broadcasters in Belize are mourning the passing of one of their own as veteran radio personality, Eustace Usher is dead. Usher passed away at his home in Belmopan on Christmas Eve after suffering from a long illness. The late Eustace Usher was the last voice Belizeans heard on the radio when Hurricane Hattie hit in 1961. In the autobiography, “Thanks for Choosing Love” by Rene Villanueva Sr., Usher recounted that in the storm’s aftermath, he walked down Albert Street but the devastation overwhelmed him and he broke down and cried. But Hattie didn’t break Usher’s career as he rose to the rank of Programme Organiser at British Honduras Broadcasting Station before leaving in 1976 to become Belmopan’s Chief Information Officer. After his retirement in 1987, Usher was commissioned by Love FM to do the commentaries on meetings of the House of Representatives. That was a job he held until 1998. Usher also kept the nation abreast of what was happening within the Ministry of Works for a time in the late 90s. The late Eustace Usher would have turned seventy-four today. His family has tentatively planned his funeral services for Sunday in Belmopan.
