Red Cross receives medicine from Egypt

Story PictureMonths after Hurricane Dean wreaked havoc in northern Belize, contributions are still coming in to assist residents. One such donation was made this afternoon to the Belize Red Cross by its sister organisation, The Red Crescent Society of Egypt. The forty-nine boxes of medicines were handed over by Egyptian Ambassador, Aly El-Hefny to Red Cross President Karen Diaz.

Karen Diaz, President, Belize Red Cross
“As you know the Red Cross, Red Crescent is made up of a hundred and eighty-six member countries, so we really do represent a vast network of resources. We share information among ourselves through the federation’s general appeal and it so happens that the Egyptian Red Crescent Society responded to our appeal in this form of medication.”

Aly El-Hefny, Egyptian Ambassador to Belize
“We are very happy to have been able to make the shipment of medicines, different types of medicines that will be of good use I hope to the Belizeans, whether those who have been affected—and I know that some of them they are still faced with some health problems and I hope the medicines will help in that treatment.”

“It’s as I said an expression of solidarity, an expression of friendship and I am sure that such a gesture will enhance even further the relations between our two countries and increase the bonds of friendship between our two people.”

Karen Diaz
“They are mainly prescription medications. There are eye drops because there has been a lot of infections from eyes. There are also dermatological creams.”

The Red Cross will be working with district health workers and the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired for the distribution of the medicines.
