Seven villages will electrify under EU Banana Programme

Story PictureSeven villages in the Stann Creek and Toledo districts will soon receive electrical service as part of the Banana Support Programme of the European Union and Belize Government. Under the five million Belize dollar project, Monkey River, Bladen, Trio, San Isidro, San Pablo and Cowpen will be electrified. The agreement signed today in Belmopan will see Belize Electricity Limited contribute one and a quarter million in counterpart funds. The E.U.’s Banana Support Programme, which includes a number of other social service components, is meant to compensate for the elimination of preferential treatment for Belize’s banana exports to Europe as ordered by the World Trade Organization.
