Super G keeps up streak of hits
He may be approaching veteran status on the Belizean music scene but the Punta Rebel who took his act solo in 2001, still has plenty of juice…as News Five’s Kendra Griffith found out this morning.
Super G, Musician
“If it wasn’t for the love of music then I wouldn’t be here.”
Kendra Griffith, Reporting
That love of music has led to Lensford “Super G” Martinez to release an average of one CD a year and this week the punta rocker is back on the media trail publicizing his fifth solo effort: 4 Men.
Super G
“This album is about more of that bashment type of thing, more of people having fun with a little message in between.”
Kendra Griffith
“What are some of those messages?”
Super G
“One of the tracks off the CD is Amulugu, which means Fool. The message behind the song is talking about someone who they sent to school and they never did make much of it. You are being a fool for going to school and not using your education in the right manner.”
But the song that has been getting the most airplay and stirring up some controversy is track five, the album’s namesake.
Super G
“I have been approached by some people from up north. They say, Super G, how comes we only wah build the house, but we do plumbing too, so in this one now I did a chorus that says the white man deals with the plumbing, I kinda mix it up a little bit fi try mek everybody feel comfortable.”
Kendra Griffith
“Did you expect that it would cause a bit of controversy?”
Super G
“In a way, yes. As a matter of fact, I didn’t think that this song would be a huge hit and then because of that it is all over the place and a lot of people look at it very serious from a serious point of view and again, like I’ve always said, most of my song is about making people smile, making people happy, that’s what I always try to do.”
Creating music is an art form, but it’s also Super G’s livelihood which is why the musician says he caters to his fans by studying the market to keep his music current.
Super G
“I go to the club once in a while and depends on what I see people are having fun with, then I go back into the studio, I go home. Okay, I think people like this style so mek I come up with something weh close to that … I noh try write songs that I love, I write songs for the people.”
Kendra Griffith
“And you noh feel that in a way you are sacrificing yourself as an artist by not writing what you like?”
Super G
“In a way, but next year 2008, I’ll be releasing my paranda project. I’ve have been a fan of paranda music ever since and I think that will be my time to actually do something for a change that I’ve had the passion to do that I have always loved.”
And so he can continue doing what he loves, Super G is asking Belizeans to support local music by buying originals, not bootlegs.

4 Men is available at music outlets for a suggested retail price of twenty-five dollars.
