New spray facility opened at western border
Construction took a little longer than expected but today, official opening ceremonies were held at the Western border to inaugurate a new facility which will sanitise vehicles entering and departing Belize. Instead of the manual spraying program like that still in place in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, traffic will now pass through a tunnel-like structure that will spray the vehicles while in motion. The project was fully funded by OIRSA in an attempt to provide for efficient and effective quarantine treatment service.
Vildo Marin, Minister of Agriculture
“This structure is one of the most modern that exists in the region and it is the first that is at the bi-national level. It symbolises, Bernardo, cooperation, collaboration, effort and dedication of both our countries Guatemala and Belize to protect its agricultural patrimony from pests and diseases of quarantine importance that create serious economic loses to the sector.”
The cost of the new infrastructure is estimated at two hundred thousand Belize dollars. According to OIRSA officials, the charge to motorists will range from six dollars for small vehicles to twelve dollars for trucks and trailers.
