Robber sentenced to five years
In another high profile conviction, nineteen year old Ryan Welcome, one of the two men charged with a robbery in which over sixty-five thousand dollars in cash and valuables were stolen, was found guilty today in the court of Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie. He was sentenced to five years in prison. The charge against the second defendant, Karim Sutherland, was dismissed last week after a no case submission was upheld. The incident occurred on April second at the parking lot of Scotiabank at mile three on the Northern Highway. Thirty-two year old Jean Deeks, assistant manager of the Fort Street Tourism Village, had gone to the bank to make a deposit when she was held up at gunpoint by a man on a scooter. The police responded quickly to the report of the robbery and Welcome was apprehended shortly afterwards. All the stolen items were recovered except for a cell phone.
