Special report on AIDS looks at vulnerable populations
In the twenty-six years since the virus that causes AIDS was discovered, one thing we have learned is that everyone is at risk. But at the same time, experts have determined that there are certain sectors of the population, because of their behaviour, have a higher probability of contracting the disease. Immediately following this newscast, Channel Five will be airing a special report featuring two of those groups: men who have sex with men and commercial sex workers. During the twenty-three minute production, News Five’s Kendra Griffith highlights the issues they face, such as social stigma and speaks with MSMs and CSWs to find out how they cope in their often hostile environment. That rejection by society poses a problem not only for the two groups, but also the organisations that work with them and Griffith canvassed agencies such as the Alliance Against AIDS, B.F.L.A., and UNIBAM to see how they are targeting the populations to reduce their vulnerability. The video was one of six projects to receive funding from the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS, of which Channel Five is a member.
