Contract signed for final 9 miles of Southern Hwy.

It has been a long time coming but today a contract was finally signed to pave the final nine miles of the Southern Highway. The run from Big Falls to Golden Stream will be handled by Cisco Construction, which was awarded the job over two foreign bidders. The sixteen million dollar project is expected to take eighteen months with work beginning immediately. Signing for Cisco was John Woods while Prime Minister Said Musa represented G.O.B. Loan funding for the project is being provided by the Kuwait Fund and OPEC Fund with counterpart financing by the government of Belize. Meanwhile, the next major works project on the list, the paving of the twenty-two mile long Placencia road, has not yet been put out to tender and it appears likely that work on that project, already green lighted by the Caribbean Development Bank, will not begin until the new financial year in April.
