Cops investigate city thefts
Separate cases of theft this week have been keeping investigators busy. In the first incident, joy riders appear to be the culprits behind the disappearance of a Nissan Pathfinder on Wednesday night. According to owner Melissa Gonzalez, between six and six-thirty she parked her SUV at the corner of Queen Street and New Road. But when she returned to the same spot a short time later, the vehicle was gone. The Nissan was found three hours later on Barrack Road but the mystery driver or drivers have yet to be detained.
An hour later, police were investigating another theft that resulted in the loss of three thousand dollars worth of household goods. According to thirty-seven year old Sherlett Lamb, sometime between seven and ten-thirty on Wednesday night, a thief or thieves broke into her Gill Street home and stole various appliances and personal property. As in the first case, investigators are still looking for the perpetrators.
But in the third theft, a video tape of the crime in progress made finding the culprit a whole lot easier, especially since the alleged thief was stealing on the job. Apparently fifty-two year old Alexia Trapp, an employee of the Belize Family Life Association, forgot that the tape was rolling last Friday evening when she went into the storeroom and made off with an entire case of contraceptive pills worth six thousand dollars. But someone was watching the video surveillance and promptly reported the incident to the boss. Today, Trapp was charged with one count of theft and is tonight out on bail. As for the pills, investigators say only a portion of the case has been recovered.
Rounding out the five finger discounts is a report by News Five’s own Marion Ali, whose motorcycle was stolen last night. According to Ali, she parked her Lifan 100 CC cycle outside her home at number one Antelope Street Extension on Wednesday evening but when she woke up this morning, the vehicle was gone.
