Sports Minister says football fields will improve
As Belize gets ready to fight its uphill battle in the eliminations leading to the 2010 World Cup, one of the embarrassments we face is the sad state of our football fields. When he briefed us on Wednesday, President of the Football Federation of Belize, Doctor Bertie Chimilio, said that for years it has been well known that Belize’s stadiums have not been World Cup ready but his concerns have fallen on deaf ears. However, today Minister of Sports Rodwell Ferguson said that if all parties get involved, then Belize should have its act together in time for the games.
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Sports
“I’ve always believed that football is an industry by itself and again ih wah tek government input, the private sector and maybe even those who are interested in sports. So the chamber suggest to Bertie that we have several organizations like maybe the Central American Bank that we can put a proposal together and seek funding form because I believe it can pay for itself and so I am waiting for him come up with a proposal. I will not write the proposal, I don’t any time but I invite him and I say Bertie you can go ahead and do it and I will help lobby especially the Ministry of National development for us to seek the funding. So I believe that the Ministry of Sports is supporting the Football Association, supporting football on a whole so once they come up with a plan then definitely we will work together for it to be achieved.”
Ferguson said he and Chimilio were supposed to meet this evening to further discuss the matter.
