Child molester sentenced to 14 years in prison
It was a major and highly distressing news story a year and a half ago and today the Belize City man found guilty of sexually assaulting a child was sentenced to fourteen years in prison. Thirty-five year old David Pavon was convicted of carnal knowledge on the testimony of a ten year old girl who told the court that Pavon took her into the sea near the Esso Fuel Depot, removed her clothes and engaged in sex with her in waist deep water. A security guard at the depot testified that he saw Pavon in the sea holding the child and alerted some of his fellow employees. They yelled at Pavon and when he did not respond they called police. Even when the cops arrived Pavon did not react to their orders until they fired a warning shot. Pavon, who was not represented by an attorney, gave an unsworn statement from the dock denying the accusations. In handing down the sentence Justice Adolph Lucas stipulated that Pavon must serve at least eight years behind bars before he is even eligible for parole.
