Financial Intelligence Unit zones in
Guatemalan national Ivan Padilla Mena remains in police custody tonight after being busted at the Western Border in Benque Viejo Town on Monday with an unusual sum of cash in Belize dollars. Police along with members of the Financial Intelligence Unit conducted a search of a Toyota Hilux bearing Guatemalan license plates driven by Padilla when they discovered a green knapsack containing twenty-two thousand, five hundred dollars in local currency. Mena has since been arrested and charged for failing to declare funds. The legal limit allowed without a declaration from the Central Bank of Belize is ten thousand dollars. It is unclear whether Mena was arriving or leaving the country at the time of the discovery.
