Police, outreach ministry combine on feeding programme

Story PictureFeeding programs for needy children are part of an increasing number of schools in Belize. In the latest such initiative, the Police Department has teamed up with the Unity Outreach Ministry in Belize City where working out of the Yarborough Community Centre, organisers report that every day an average of seventy-five children and adults from the area show up for a plate of food.

Inspector Diana Hall, O.C., Community Policing, Belize District
“We know that some children are going to school without having a proper lunch or breakfast and we wanted to do something good for the children. We know that when they are in school they cannot function properly if they do not have a proper meal so at least we could provide one meal for them.”

Sister Erna Jones, President, Unity Outreach Ministry
“We do have needy children, real needy children. Some of the children it’s not just because of a need but because they are far away from home and maybe they wouldn’t get enough of a healthy meal so we come together here and make sure they get a healthy meal.”

Janelle Chanona
”What would you like to tell the rest of the public about this initiative?”

Sister Erna Jones
“Well what I would like to tell them is that we need some funds, some donations and we need more food.”

“Because of donations, I have not put a count but I sure that we spend two hundred dollars a day for food if we should shop.”

Inspector Diana Hall
“It’s a good feeling to help those in need and we want to continue to work with other organizations. And also we are having our Christmas drive campaign that we do every year and we are appealing to the public for food items and toys and whatever they have that they do not need that can help someone else.”

If you would like to contribute towards to the Yarborough Centre Feeding Program or the Christmas Drive, please contact Diana Hall 601-4594 or Sister Jones at 600-7075.
