Deon Slusher charged with prison murder
Twenty-five year old prison inmate, Deon Slusher, was today formally arraigned before Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie for the murder of fellow prisoner, Gilroy “Hootie” Wade. Wade was shot dead inside the Kolbe Prison compound last Thursday while on recreational break. Today in court, Slusher accused prison authorities of beating him in order to make him confess to committing the crime. He complained of blurred vision through his left eye and McKenzie ordered police to take him for medical treatment. The matter was adjourned until December eighteenth. On January of 2004 Deon Slusher, along with another man, was convicted of the murder of businessman Philip Chin, who was killed on February fourth, 2002. While the Court of Appeal upheld their conviction, it ruled that they were not afforded a proper hearing. As a result, their death sentence was quashed and replaced with life imprisonment.
