…and make an arrest in prison murder

Story PictureLate breaking news tonight is that police have arrested and charged prisoner Deon Slusher for the murder of fellow inmate Gilroy Wade. There is very little information surrounding the arrest but we do understand that Slusher is serving a life sentence for the murder of Philip Chin. And while an arrest has been made, the family of murdered inmate Gilroy Wade continues to look for answers tonight. According to Avis Williams, she has yet to be officially informed of the shooting which fatally wounded her son and has had to rely on rumours.

Avis Williams, Mother of Murdered Prisoner
“I noh really sure because I noh get no information. I noh really know nothing weh di happen.”

Marion Ali
“Weh you mean you noh get no information?”

Avis Williams
“Because the prison official deh noh call me yet, almost twenty-four hours now. Nobody from the prison have contacted me fi tell me, well, yu son get shot or anything; nobody up to now.
And everybody dah that prison know me because I neva neglect my son one day, not one day. Anybody weh go dah prison could tell you deh see me deh. I support my son deh.”

Marion Ali
“You said that for several months people have been threatening him?”

Avis Williams
“Wah few months back when deh put ah dah…me noh even know if dah multi max, me noh know how the place name…but when ih mi deh there you can’t see ah, you can’t visit ah, you can’t call ah, you can’t get nothing to ah. Maybe deh allow you one food and wah juice because deh seh that dah punishment because ih mi stab wah guy Hyde. Just di truth ah what happen; that’s all I want from them. Because my son done dead and gone, there’s nothing I could do about it and my son peaceful more than any of them.”

When we contacted Hattieville Prison’s Chief Executive Officer Marlon Skeen, he maintained that management had invited Wade’s family to a meeting at the facility this afternoon to discuss the incident but he says Williams never showed up. Prison officers are now trying to figure out how the weapon was smuggled into the facility in the first place. Gilroy Wade was shot once behind the left ear around three Thursday afternoon while on recreational break near the Maximum Security area. Apparently the guards had conducted several searches on the compound after receiving tips that a gun was on the grounds but their searches proved futile. Wade had been on death row for approximately seven years following his conviction for the murder of Ozrin White in 2000. Immediately after the shooting, prison officials ordered a lockdown, meaning no one was allowed to leave. We understand that order will be lifted on Monday so visits can continue. Families can still drop off food to their loved ones over the weekend.
