San Pedro man shot dead by policeman
Tonight an internal investigation continues into a police shooting that has left a San Pedro man dead. According to an eyewitness, around ten-thirty on Wednesday night, twenty-six year old Jimmy Gutierrez was spotted carrying a weapon at Wet Willie’s Bar in the San Juan area. Someone tipped off the cops but by then Gutierrez was already heading home. Police caught up to him near his apartment building but it is alleged that as Gutierrez turned the lane, he pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officers. We understand seven shots were heard but up to news time it was still unclear how many bullets came from Gutierrez and how many were fired by the officers. The victim was hit several times in the chest and was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Pedro Lions Clinic. Investigators say they later recovered a nine millimetre handgun and nine rounds of ammunition from the scene. The results of a post mortem conducted on the deceased have yet to be released to the media. According to authorities, a team from the police Internal Affairs Unit has been dispatched to the island to verify the officers’ account of the shooting. While that report is not complete, tonight we understand that at least one person has reported that Gutierrez assaulted him with a weapon shortly before his confrontation with the police.
