Benque and Roots draw in Super League football
James Adderley
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and we welcome you to this fresh dish of Sports Monday. We decided to take a closer look at the newly formed Super League of Belize, so we zoomed in on Saturday night’s face off between Benque Viejo D.C. United and the home team Roots F.C. inside the M.C.C. Grounds.
And in fact both this opening a by the visitors and the defensive response by the Roots F.C. makes us wonder momentarily if we’ve made the right move. At the other end Eric Robinson beats his man only to launch a left foot that brings some embarrassment. The Benque team then goes to the set piece for offence, Habib Cano’s offering is misplayed by the Roots keeper, Gersen Gonzalez, but the follow up header by Ervin Carillo is deemed by the referee to have been preceded by a foul.
Downfield Maurice Francis comes up with a shoot for Roots, but it was always rising. It’s more pressure from Roots F.C. when Rupert Smith flashes his left foot – the crossbar sends the pill to Maurice Francis who is again denied by the Benque keeper. We’re a minute before intermission when Gomer Enriquez fires this spot kick from on top the eighteen and nobody can get to it, not even the keeper. Benque Viejo takes a 1-zip lead into the locker room.
The second half Nerman Brakeman almost comes up with the equaliser for Roots off this header. Again it’s another nice attempt for the home team to equalise when Kent Ramos fires this bomb from midfield, but it fails to accomplish the mission. Folks, the equaliser come at the eighty-second minute when Maurice Francis squeezes this header into goal and at the end of regulation play we have a 1-1 final.
In other Super League action, Forever Strong Kraal Road beat up Belmopan Bandits 4-1; Tex Mar Boys blanked Estrellas F.C. 2-zip; Barrio Fino F.C. shock and awed Adventurers 6-1; and San Pedro doubled Belmopan 4-2. On this weeks schedule Barrio Fino F.C. faces Estrellas F.C. Saturday night at Belmopan and Forever Strong Kraal Road goes up against Adventurers at the M.C.C. Ground, while on Sunday Tex Mar Boys travel to Benque Viejo D.C. United and Alpha Barcelona will host Roots F.C. at the People’s Stadium.
Turning to the RFG Cup Tournament, action in week five saw Georgetown Ibayani hurting Hankook Verdes 2-1; San Pedro Dolphins jerked Suga Boys Juventus 1-zip; Revolutionary Conquerors humbled the defending champion F.C. Belize all of 4-1; and Belize Defence Force rolled over Santels of Santa Elena 1-zip. This week schedule finds Georgetown Ibayani hosting Revolutionary Conquerors Saturday night. On Sunday, Santels face Hankook Verdes in an intramural at San Ignacio; the B.D.F. matches to Wagiya at Dangriga; and F.C. Belize returns to the M.C.C. Grounds for its match with Suga Boys Juventus.
In softball news, Interoffice play at Rogers Stadium over the weekend saw Belize Telemedia take out the Ministry of Education Brodies 18-7. Club 313 dismissed Courts 15-5. Customs Central Bank beat up the Ministry of Education Brodies 10-4; FirstCaribbean clubbed Club 313, 9-6; the Belize City Council dumped Belize Telemedia 16-7; Police busted Belize Bank 16-8; U.B. schooled Courts 18-7; K.H.M.H. handled Customs Central Bank 14-7; and the Belize City Council manhandled the Police 21-nil.
In basketball news, we head to Burrell Boom for the championship match between B’ Block Shooters and Fresh Pond Punishers and it’s David Jones leading the way as he strikes for two points for the Punishers. At the other end, Ian Baptist finds Herman Talbert who hits two in heavy traffic. Talbert would lead his team with a two doubles of twelve points, twelve rebounds. However the Punishers brought out too many tonight: Joslyn Valerio speeds down court for two, David Jones then shows off his mid range jumper – he would finish with a team high twelve points, nine boards. Even the old veteran Raymond Gongora gets into the act as Fresh Pond Punishers go onto win the match 60-50. We say congratulations.
In closing folks, we’d just like to congratulate Seagull Marin for his work with the Lake I Community in presenting sporting competitions for juveniles. Over the weekend, Leroy Sutherland won the two hundred meters; Akeem Lambey, the four hundred; Percy Audinett, the eight hundred. Percy Audinett also won the fifty metres race; Leroy Nunez took the one hundred meters. Bicycle racing was also presented on this card. Stephan Pasos took the Beach Cruiser race and won the BMX ride. We say congrats to all and hopefully this good work will continue.
That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
