Revived play hits the stage at Bliss

Story PictureHe’s probably one of the most written about folkloric characters in the Caribbean and this Saturday the mischievous but loveable spider known as Anansi will be showcased on stage at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts. The play, entitled Tiga Dead, was written by Governor General Sir Colville Young, is directed by Beverly Swasey, and will be performed by Belmopan’s Culture Capital drama group. Recently Mrs. Anansi, Bra Haligata, and Bra Dog stopped by our studios to give us a special preview.

Beverly Swasey, Director/Mrs. Anansi, Tiga Dead
“It’s about Anansi as usual tricking Tiga, which is the main one he usually tries to trick.”

“Mrs. Anansi doesn’t have a very big part in this play, that’s why I took it because directing it and acting is not the best situation to be in, so I took the one with the least lines and that was Mrs. Anansi.”

Michelle Rodriguez, Bra Dog, Tiga Dead
“I am Bra Dog.”

“I am quarrelsome, arrogant, I am used to getting my own way, but I enjoy my character. It’s out of character for my but I like it, I like it.”

“I studied my dogs and I have to scratch and bark and pant [laughs] so I enjoyed it, it was fun.”

Yanira Bonilla, Bra Haligata, Tiga Dead
“Well in the play I am Bra Haligata, so called the king of the River. My character is not the funniest one, it’s a very short part, but I’m like the serious type. Level-headed, I am the level headed one in the play.”

Michelle Rodriguez
You know the Anansi stories have been forgotten and I think this group really brings out what storytelling was all about back in the days and it’s funny, it’s really, really funny. We have an excellent group of actors and I think they will really enjoy it.”

Beverly Swasey
“Part of the proceeds of this play, or at least half of it, will go to Belmopan Cancer Society because we planning to start a hospice programme, first by training people how to take care of their terminally ill family or relatives.”

“It’s for all ages and the kids will love it even more and the people my age and over who know a lot about Anansi stories will have a great time.”

Tickets for Tiga Dead can be purchased at the Bliss and CY’s on Hyde Lane for ten dollars general, twenty reserve. The show starts at seven on Saturday night at the Bliss.
