…as press officer defends island cops

Story PictureActing Police Press Officer, Assistant Superintendent Bart Jones, says even though police have an entirely different version, an investigation has already begun into the report filed by Young.

A.S.P. Bart Jones, Acting Police Press Officer
”The police officers in San Pedro are saying that sometime after five on Monday evening they received information about a person by the name of Calvin Young who were in possession of a quantity of marijuana and firearms at his residence. They proceeded upon that information and went to the residence I think in the San Juan area where they went to the house and the strong aroma of marijuana burning was smelt. They, in turn, indicated to Mr. Young that they wanted to search and he in turn released his pit bull dogs that were chained in the yard according to them. They are saying then that they managed to sway the dogs and they went inside and executed a search where they found a small quantity of marijuana. It would appear that some of the marijuana may have been flushed from what they are saying. And he was arrested for that but in the process of being under arrest for the marijuana that was found in his house he resisted but was overcomed and was taken to the station where he continued with a series of abusive words which resulted as well in a police officer being punched by him at the police station. He was subsequently placed in the cell and the following day he made a report to Mr. Pott of being abused but prior to that, while in custody, Mr. Pott had directed that a medical form be issued to him because Mr. Pott got word that he was injured. What had happened is that because of his behaviour they asked the doctor to come in to examine him at the station, as opposed to taking him to the clinic, where the doctor made certain classifications on the form. As a result Mr. Pott had commenced his investigation as it relates to that allegation made by Mr. Young.”

“Mr. Young is claiming that police that cannot produce weapons or drugs that he had at his house, one, and two, that he, Calvin Young, can produce witnesses who can testify that he did not, in any way, resist or assault police officers.”

A.S.P. Bart Jones
”Well, Marion he would in fact say anything. I am not saying that-because I was not there-certainly I can only give account of what the officers are saying. He was charge for possession of controlled drugs so you cannot be charged for being in the possession of controlled drugs if no drugs was in fact found so I think that speaks for that.”

Marion Ali
“That zero point one gram of marijuana he says they found him with, they didn’t show him any drugs.”

A.S.P. Bart Jones
”Well certainly I cannot speak for what he saying but I know the process is that the person has to see the drugs being found, being sealed in envelope and all the process that goes along with a person being charged for drugs so I cannot see them not showing him that, noh. We cannot stop Mr. Young from utilizing the rights that are available to him. If he feels that he has been wronged he has a right to take whatever actions but the police officers are saying certain things so in fact, you know…”

Marion Ali
“But an internal investigation is on going?”

A.S.P. Bart Jones
”Is on going, I was assured of that”
