Philip DeShield wins Belize Scholarship
The 2007 Belize Scholarship recipient has been announced. He is nineteen year old Belize City resident Philip Harold DeShield. At the end of the last school year, DeShield was one of two hundred and twenty-seven Belizean students who sat the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations, but his grades in Biology, Chemistry, and Communication Studies have made him top of the class. In June, DeShield graduated with honours from St. John’s Junior College and two months later, he left Belize to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry at Goshen College in Indiana. According to his family, DeShield plans on becoming a veterinarian like his father, Michael. The Belize Scholarship is valued at eighty thousand dollars and since Philip is already the recipient of another award granted through S.J.C. Junior College, officials in the Ministry of Education say he will be assisted with any fees or educational expenses that are incurred during his studies abroad. The student to place second in this year’s CAPE, Colette Eusey, is also a graduate of St. John’s Junior College.
