Clothes salesman killed in morning machete attack
The seventy-first murder of the year took place last night in southern Belize. According to police, around seven-thirty this morning, residents in Independence Village called 911 to report that a man was lying in a pool of his own blood inside a clothing store at the corner of King and Main streets. Subsequent investigations revealed that the deceased was twenty-one year old Guatemalan salesman Jorge Gonzalo, the owner of the shop. He was taken to the Southern Regional Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The left side of Gonzalo’s face bore a large machete wound and it is believed he bled to death. However, a post mortem has been scheduled for tomorrow afternoon to confirm the cause of death. The young businessman was last seen alive approximately one hour before his body was found, but Independence police say at this time they have no leads as to why Gonzalo was killed. The murder weapon, a machete, has been recovered. Gonzalo had been operating in Independence for some time, travelling from Guatemala with clothes to sell in his store.
