Left alone in house, baby dies in fire
A toddler perished in a fire that destroyed his home in Independence Village in the Stann Creek District on Saturday night. Police say they were summoned to 113 Flamboyant Street after eleven on Saturday night where the small wooden structure was already engulfed in flames. Neighbours could not stop the blaze before it claimed the life of two year-old Raheem Martinez. His parents, Remejio Martinez Junior and Dorla Flores, had reportedly left the child alone inside with a mosquito coil burning. The fire also completely destroyed all the contents inside the wood and palmetto structure. A neighbouring house was also partially damaged. Authorities believe the blaze was caused by the lit mosquito coil but are investigating to make an accurate determination. Police are looking to see whether they will bring any charges of child neglect or related offences against the parents.
