CABEI provides U.S.$100,000 grant for hurricane relief

Earlier this week we travelled to Corozal for an update on recovery efforts in that district following the destruction caused by Hurricane Dean. And while the consensus is that the area is rebounding successfully, it is clear that the economic loss was great. One welcome source of assistance recently announced is a one hundred thousand U.S. dollar grant from the Central American Bank of Integration. The funds will be used to support government’s relief programme in the north. The regional bank, known by the acronym CABEI, was founded in 1960 by the governments of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Belize became a member a year ago. In addition to the emergency funds for Belize, the bank also provided one hundred thousand dollars toward hurricane relief in Mexico and two hundred thousand to Nicaragua in the aftermath of Felix.
