Rotaract club feeds school children
“Empti krokos bag kyaahn stan op” says the well known Kriol proverb. It refers, of course, to the need for proper nourishment … and that’s exactly what one group of public spirited Belizeans had in mind for some Belize City children.
Jacqueline Godwin, Reporting
This morning was a busy day for the staff at Stella Maris School as they prepared a special breakfast for thirty of their students. The boys and girls who all received a bowl of cereal, Johnny cakes with cheese and a slice of watermelon thanks to a first of its kind feeding programme by the Rotaract Club.
Herschel Armstrong –Publicity director, Rotaract Club of Belize
“And Stella Maris came to mind because it’s a school with children who don’t get noticed as often as they should. It’s a very good school; they have a lot of good programmes here. They do a lot, more than some other primary schools in Belize and we felt that this would be a good school to do, because of the needs of the children, the things that the children go through.”
The children will be provided with breakfast for five days a week for the rest of the school year.
Dana Staine, Coordinator, School Breakfast Programme
“Our breakfast is our most important meal for the day because most of the students come in the morning without breakfast and without a proper breakfast they are not able to function properly.”
“We had already, giving cereal to the students, but being Rotaract have taken on this project it will be more better structured for the students. We had where they were given cereal in the morning before, but now Rotaract will take it over so I guess it will be more structured now.”
Rotaract held a number of fund raising drives throughout the summer including bake and barbeque sales and even a catamaran cruise to provide the funds needed to support the programme.
Rotaract would like to give special thanks to Grace Kennedy Belize Limited and Santiago Castillo Limited for their support of the feeding programme.
