The United States Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues and the Special Representative to Muslim Communities has approved fifty nominations for participation in the Women in Public Service Project. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton launched the project in March 2011. The Project is a partnership between the State Department and the Seven Sisters Women’s Colleges to create training, mentoring and networking opportunities for emerging and aspiring women leaders in the field of public service. Nearly two hundred nominations were received and only fifty were accepted. Amongst the fifty women selected to participate in the pre-colloquium on December fifteenth, and a one-day leadership training is U.D.P. Caribbean Shores’ political aspirant and Women’s Commission Executive Director Ann-Marie Williams. Williams, whose slogan is “A Woman’s Place is in the House”, took time out from the campaign trail to let voters know about the importance of the project.

“I will be going on an international visitors program first that will take me on training missions with policy makers, academics, women from all over the world—to several cities in United States; starting first in San Francisco. After which I will arrive in Washington D.C. for a one day training colloquium which will be headed by Hillary Clinton herself. The award is an opportunity for women from a geographically and cultural diverse nation and women with different abilities to come together for opportunities of networking, leadership training and speaking engagements. The award is just to promote and highlight leaders and emerging leaders who are in the field of development, politics and public service. At the time when I am trying to seek the nominations in Caribbean Shores, I think it is very, very timely and it just adds to my journey of development and my journey where development and leadership is concerned and I’m humbled at the chance and I’m grateful.”

“Since you’ve mentioned the campaign, how has the campaign been going and does this award help to s how the public that you are the leader that you say you are?”

“Well I hope this award would help to fortify the things that I’ve been doing and of course to—like you put it—show the public the leader—not that I say I am, but the leader that people have seen. And it is time for us to really cultivate great leaders and one would agree with me that in terms of our lovely country, we are deficient where leadership is concerned and we have to raise up more Belizean leaders. And so this is one of many examples of that being done firsthand and I am thankful for the opportunity. But by me getting this training, it’s an opportunity for me to come back to help to raise up new young men and women as leaders in our society and by extension our country.”
Before the one day training session in DC, the women will be treated to a tour of two US cities.
