September Celebrations calendar launched
The countdown to the September celebrations has officially begun. This morning the steering committee launched the calendar and playbill for the 2007 list of activities during ceremonies at the Belize City House of Culture. According to Pro-Tem Chairman Rene Villanueva Sr., the events are a Belizean blend of tradition and modern entertainment.

“Well It’s important to understand that the calendar of events come from the people themselves, alright. A lot of suggestions were requested form the people of Belize, to be include on the play bill on the calendar of events. And it was those suggestions that came in, and the organisations that pitched in—of course the committee itself takes charge of the official celebrations—but the suggestions that came from the public at large are what ended up on the playbill. There were two criteria, two main criteria, and one of it is that it had to be open to the public, in other words, for it to be included on the play bill, the public had to have access to it, and the other one, it had to be Belizean. So you end up with a complete Belizean— so see, you find out that maybe some of the foreign stuff might not find their way on this particular playbill. It’s a completely Belizean playbill and remember in the past, we used to promote a lot of the foreign artists and so on. We have tried as much as possible over the past two years as a committee, to concentrate on things Belizean and on building our country Belize, and really uniting us as a people to celebrate around what is really Belizean.”
One of the highlights of this morning’s event was the unveiling of the September Celebrations logo and theme. The winning theme: “Independent, Strong and Free, Belize Fi All Ah We” was submitted by fourteen year old E.P.Yorke student Esther Humes. The teenager was awarded a thousand dollar cash prize for her effort. For a full list of the events please visit the website www.septembercelebrations.com.
