Zelda Wade Hill wins celebrations theme competition
Also at St. George’s Caye, the September celebrations logo and theme were unveiled. But oops! If you couldn’t read it was because it was upside down. Nonetheless, the winning theme: “Diverse Origins, Common Aspirations…Together We Celebrate as Belizeans” was chosen from seventy-five entries. And the lucky winner was Zelda Wade Hill of Belmopan who received one thousand dollars and an award from the NICH for winning the competition. The aspiring writer told News Five she made her submissions two days before the deadline for the competition.
Zelda Wade Hill, Winner, 2009 September Celebrations Theme Competition
“About two days before the deadline that I sat down and brainstormed and I was thinking about something that was going to unite us as Belizeans during this time because so many things happened to separate us. So many things have happened over the years. But finally, just before twelve o’clock, I actually came up with two themes and that was the first one on my submission and that’s how I came up with the theme.”
Diane Haylock, President, NICH
“Seventy-five entries were made by sixty-one persons so some people had more than one entry. So we had a very involved process in trying to make a determination on which theme we would go with and we thought that the one that we ultimately selected resonated well with where we are, who we are and what we’re trying to do as a people. We see our diversity as a great strength; we think it is wonderful that despite our small size, we have all this diversity of people, of cultures of different ways of being and seeing things. But despite these differences we do have common aspirations and Belizeans.”
