Kulture Yabra takes over 35 crown
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into this version of Sports Monday.
The champion and the sub-champion in the 2007 Belize Premier Football League take their dreams to the international scene as they compete in this year’s UNCAF Champions Tournament. The champion F.C. Belize opens against Puntarenas at Cost Rica tomorrow three p.m., while the return match is set for August sixteenth inside the M.C.C. Grounds. The sub-champion, Revolutionary Conquerors, sees action against Real Espana on Wednesday eighth, and the home game comes up at Dangriga on August fourteenth inside the Carl Ramos Stadium. All matches, all the away matches I should say, will be aired on Goal T.V.
With the big guys out of the way people, we turn our camera’s onto the Super League match-ups at the National Stadium Sunday as we join the first division confrontation between Kraal Road and Atlantic Insurance both tied at one a piece in the second half.
Abel Sucuqui of Atlantic Insurance gets the inspiration that he could bust up the lead only to find out that goalkeeper Lenares does possess some skills. Louis Ariola keeps the pressure on with this spot kick, but the goalkeeper gives up the corner kick instead. At the other end Jack Dawson looks to change things for Kraal Road only to see the challenge from Carlos Ardon deny him the objective.
Lois Ariola steps up to the very spot kick and makes Kraal Road pay, Atlantic goes up 2-1. In the end, this offensive push by Kraal Road allows Denroy Andrews to shake the net as this ballgame concludes in a 2-2 tie.
We now go to the over thirty-five nightcap as “Dugu” Thomas finds Morris Francis but he can’t deliver the magic in this match-up between Vipor Lake and Kulture Yabra.
Ten years ago Ricky Gongora would have made Kulture Yabra pay as he sends it wide of the target. Let’s just quickly conclude that this is a fun outing people and indeed the comedy of errors does provide some entertainment.
We’re still in the first half when Francis gets another crack at goal – this time he is denied by the goalkeeper. And then it’s Ricky Gongora’s turn to be denied a few minutes later. At the half it is a scoreless ballgame.
Immediately into second half, Kulture Yabra gets this opportunity to move the scoreboard and yet somehow managed to come away empty-handed.
David “Manu” McCauley gets his turn to give Yabra the lead from point-blank range, but it’s right at the goalkeeper. On this trip, this shot from John Samuels rebounds off the keeper to Albert Hoare who knows what to do with the pill. And guess what, Kulture Yabra goes up 1-zip.
It’s an even bigger hole for the Lake when this long shot from David McCauley somehow gets past Valentine Ferguson in the goal. Down 2-nil, Arthur “the Mob” Flowers strikes for a goal for the Lake to make it a 2-1 ballgame. However, when the long whistle blows its Kulture Yabra who owns the big W by that very same score of 2-1.
Finally, for football at least, Third World United presents the Sir George Brown Invitational Cup Tournament for under-fifteen players beginning Saturday August eleventh and extends to Saturday, thirteenth October. Hey people, let’s make it work in the name of Sir George Brown, a worthy Belizean who recently passed away.
In triathlon news, the Belize Triathlon Association is gearing up for two major events coming up very shortly, so we went to President David Gomez for the details.
David Gomez, President, Belize Triathlon Association
“While we’re trying to grow the sport, a lot of the younger people are not comfortable with the swimming aspect of it, even though some of them like riding and others like running. So what we have decided to do this year is to build on the initiative we offered last year and offer a back-to-school competition in particular for the kids out of the various communities in Belize City. And that will be held on Saturday the twenty-seventh of August at the Sandlighter’s promenade. and at the same time what we will also do is open up the swim course and the run and riding courses for those corporate teams and individuals who intend to participate in the ninth of September, eighth annual Lion Man Triathlon Event.”

“But how do the children get in?”
David Gomez
“It’s open registration that day on the twenty-seventh. The events will be in the afternoon from two until four o’ clock. The kids can just show up and sign up. We have a swim course charted out which runs parallel to the sea wall, so we actually have kids swimming out and then we do a short run up to just beyond the Pickwick Club area and then a short ride as well. The idea is really to stimulate an interest in triathlon and to offer the kids who are normally in that area or wanting of something to do to give them a fun event for the afternoon. But it also gives us an opportunity to look at the course, look at the layout, and then consider some of the technical issues”
We certainly wish the Belize Triathlon Association maximum success people.
Finally, we turn to the Boom Basketball Tournament. Friday night Alfred Bainton came out with a bang … came out big time as Reneau Black Orchids routed Seidy’s Believers 96-66. Bainton struck for thirty-two points, ten rebounds while dishing out three assists, and that’s big! In the opener, B Block Shatters ran over United 78-50.
Meanwhile on Saturday night’s Maxi Basket at Big Bird’s Isle, M&M Christian Ambassadors beat BWS Bulls 65-60 and Albert Hawks rolled past Belmopan Gemstone Properties 68-52.
Thus the playoffs begin on Tuesday with Old Technical Boys facing Old Cemetery and BWS Bulls battling Belmopan Gemstone Properties.
Hey folks, we certainly hope you stay tuned, that’s it for now though, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
