Crimestoppers honours program supporters

Story PictureCrimestoppers Belize has done their fair share in assisting the Police Department to close cases. It uses anonymous tips from the public and offers rewards to encourage people to report crimes they witness. In celebrating its fifth year of operation, Crimestoppers is also honouring the people that have made the program a success. Those supporters will be recognized in a ceremony tonight at Old Belize. Crimestoppers’ Alberto Young told News Five today what the event is all about and shared some of the programs successes.

Alberto Young, Former Chair, Crimestoppers
“What the event will do is basically recognize those people who have supported Crimestoppers in its initiatives through the many years that has led to the success of all these cases being closed—for instance the media, people like the Habet group, Belize Bank, all of these institutions that have helped us throughout the year. Very importantly is the media and of course the police that have cooperated with the program because this program is independently run of the police, but there is collaboration. The most significant achievement has been up to own I believes about thirty-one cases closed. More recently there was a case closed with respect to the recovery of a firearm and ammunition. I think this was about a week or two ago. Those were the successes basically the cases; carnal knowledge, contraband, even a murder case in San Pedro because of the help of Crimestoppers.”

Duane Moody
“What’s in stores Crimestoppers Belize say in the next five years or so?”

Alberto Young
“One; reinforce the use of the number, educate people more about the use and the anonymity. People need to trust the service that it works and it has worked. Also collaboration with Miami Dade and our foreign based call centers that they actually visit the communities and see what’s happening here because we’re sending up information and they don’t know where Racecourse Street may be or where Central American Boulevard and what might be the geography of Belize.”
