Boxing, bodybuilding headline weekend sports
Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
We take you immediately to the Princess Hotel and Casino where Saturday night Belizean boxing took centre stage.
In the centre of the square ring is the new promoter Osmond Martinez introducing Wilmer Rene Fernandez of Honduras to his right and local boozing talent Horace Cadle for the main event – a six round event at 154 pounds.
Fernandez dominates the first round with heavy lefts and rights forcing Cadle to cover up.
In the second round Cadle establishes his distance and his game and turns the tide a bit.
In the fourth round this vicious head butt from Fernandez catches Cadle on the side of the face – the fight is stopped and so we go to the score sheet. The numbers add up to Horace Cadle’s favour – he wins a split decision and we say congratulations.
The other professional fight of the card saw a Mexican fighter pitch a shut-out against the local talent Lino as the visitor picks up the first round T.K.O. and Lino certainly wasn’t ready for this particular outing, people.
Turning to the amateur fights, Marlon Osmond of Mexico proved too much for Mauricio Romero but it certainly was a close one.
In the following fight Franklin Murillo was able to hold on against Alister Barrow in an exciting encounter.
In the meantime, Johnathan Reyes was able to prevail against Harry Zelaya in another all Belizean bout.
The fight between Joseph Gentle and Jimmy Polonio proved to be a monster people but when the judge’s decision came Joseph Gentle had earned the W.
To the boxing community we say good show and we also say let’s do it again.
Meanwhile we say congratulations to Leslie Rogers who provided the trophies for the amateur fight in the memory of former Deputy Prime Minister of Belize, sports enthusiast and sports commentator the late Honourable C.L.B. Rogers.
We also want to send kudos to Leslie Rogers and Lady Rebels for capturing this year’s Belize City Female Softball Title.
Turning to the bodybuilding scene, athletes and officials of four countries have filled the stage at the Bliss Institute Saturday night for the third presentation of the Central American Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships in Belize.
At the Under 21 Class, Tyronne Gomez of Nicaragua is simply built to claim first place and he does and we say to him you’re a bad man.
Ivan Quintana of El Salvador takes second and Jose Siguina of Guatemala settles for third.
Now here’s a look at the Master’s Class featuring four world class contenders.
Folks, Rudy Delgado of Guatemala leaves no doubt he’s the baddest with this routine which takes him to top honours.
Gilroy Nembhard gives him a good run for the money but Nembhard has to adjust to second place.
Mauricio Salgado of El Salvador takes home third.
Veteran Joseph McClaren also in this category finished fourth but we believe this Belizean deserves a lifetime award from the sport.
In the body fitness at 1.04 centimetres Sandra Lopez of El Salvador takes top honours.
Belizean Kimberly Weir hangs on to second place while Jennifer Guerra of Guatemala takes third.
In the welterweight bodybuilding class this shakedown is massive but at the end Tyronne Gomez of Nicaragua returns to add this category to his winnings tonight.
Deon Danderson takes second place in this event.
At the middleweight classification Marlon Carillo of Nicaragua wins top honours.
Gilroy Nembhard again has to settle for second while Carlos Lopez pulls up third.
In female bodybuilding at the lightweight class Yadira Morales of Nicaragua takes top honours, she’s being flanked by Ruth Sosa of El Salvador and Maria Pisquily of Guatemala who finish second and third respectively.
Areli Guzman of Guatemala wins body fitness at 1.58 centimetres
Kayla Myvette gets top honours over Arlene Welch and Josephine Gault at 1.68 centimetres in body fitness
Yadira Morales of Nicaragua wins body fitness at 1.36 centimetres and we certainly want to say it was a good show, okay.
