B.C.W.L. disputes contract termination by CITCO

On Thursday, the Belize City Council told News Five that it will not renew its contract with Belize Waste Control Limited, but today that sanitation company says it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. According to a letter from the B.W.C.L., the company has a valid ten year contract with the Belize City Council. General Manager George Lamb declined an on camera interview with News Five this afternoon, but maintained that he was very surprised and disappointed by what he characterised as attempts by the Mayor and her council to publicly condemn and tarnish the professional image of his company. Lamb’s letter asserts that “on May eight, 2007, B.W.C.L. exercised and acted upon its option under the current contract and renewed the garbage collection contract for a further period of ten years commencing December fourth, 2007.” B.W.C.L. also contends that any dispute or complaint between commercial customers should be referred to arbitration with the City Council as arbitrator. Lamb says B.W.C.L. has not been invited to attend any such arbitration. B.W.C.L. has sought legal representation and assures the public that it will continue its operations. While we were unable to get comment from the Belize City Council about Lamb’s letter, on last night’s newscast the council maintained that the B.C.W.L. contract will not be renewed when it expires in December because of deteriorating relations between the company and the council.
