“The first article has to do with black gold and white gold. We all know black gold is about oil, but what this writer is saying that white gold is overlooked, especially in developing countries. White gold refers to coastal land and what he tells us in that in the long term looking at coastal land and using it as a valuable economic resource, it’s more sustainable and it earns more revenue. In Belize right now, seventy-five percent of our coastal land is owned by foreigners. So that is what is he looking at, an entire analysis.
The second article has to do with looking at the regional choice of Belizeans, either for economic trade with the Caribbean or with Central America. We did all the analysis for this professor at Michigan State and the results of course are there to look at. What is Belize’s economic destiny? Is it Caribbean, Central America and what is the major economic influence from, Caribbean or Central America?”
“The third article has to do with looking at development strategies in comparison with either from a moral foundation or a rational economic foundation. And what the author is saying is that usually in developing countries, we base a lot on morality and all that and we overlook the rational economic principles and theories. So he looks at that paradox and then offers some sort of solution.”
“The fourth article, of course we know the hurricane season is coming, so we got our fourth article from somebody at the National Met Service, Mr. Gonguez and he is looking at the probability of measuring thunderstorm potential and how that could be predicted within the range of the hurricane season which is commencing I think tomorrow.”
The May 2007 issue also includes a book review of Rene Villanueva’s Thanks for Choosing Love. Copies of Belizean Studies are fifteen dollars each. All inquires about the publication can be forwarded to the editors at Belizean studies at yahoo dot com.
