It’s official: Lewis out, Mahung in as U.B. president
Two weeks ago it was a rumour but tonight we can confirm that Dr. Corinth Morter-Lewis is being replaced as President of the University of Belize. According to U.B. Board Chairman Dr. Louis Zabaneh, although Lewis’s contract does not come to an end until the middle of next year, beginning in June she will be shifted to a lesser post and Dr. Santos Mahung will officially be named President of the institution. Mahung has served as the Director of Scholarships and Training at the Organization of American States, a position which Zabaneh says has given him valuable experience. Doctors Zabaneh, Lewis and Mahung all represented U.B. abroad last week as the institution is seeking to develop stronger faculty links with various universities. According to the U.B. Chairman, Lewis and Mahung are both committed to working together for the best interest of the university. As for why Lewis is being replaced, Dr. Zabaneh informed us that the university’s President is appointed by the Prime Minister and Minister of Education … who were both unavailable for comment.
