Signa Yorke lecture on Guat. claim set for Tues.

Story PictureOn Tuesday night, the seventeenth annual Signa Yorke Lecture Series will continue its tradition of provoking thought on critical issues facing Belize. This year’s topic is “the Implication of Taking the Belize-Guatemala Differendum to the International Court of Justice”. Panellists include James Murphy, who has published several books about the claim; Fred Martinez, Belize’s Ambassador to Guatemala; and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Godfrey Smith. According to organizers, attendance at the event is a must for every Belizean.

David Leacock, Assistant Dean, Student Affairs
“The issue is one of national importance. I think as citizens that ought to be incentive enough. So if we care about Belize, if we are patriotic, we ought to be motivated enough to attend a forum such as this to be informed so that when this issue is presented before us, in a national referendum for example, we will have the information necessary to make an informed decision.”

“The heart of the issue would be to look at the issue will be to look at what are the strongest arguments to taking the issue to the International Court of Justice; what are the strongest arguments against taking it to the International Court of Justice so that the Belizean public would be able to make an informed decision. So please come out and be informed.”

Janelle Chanona
“You personally, have you made up your mind one way or the other on this?”

David Leacock
“No, I stand to be informed like anybody else.”

The Signa Yorke Lecture will take place on Tuesday, April twenty-fourth at Holy Redeemer Parish Hall. The event is scheduled to start at seven and attendance is free.
