Kleptomaniac granny gets two years for shoplifting

A Belize City grandmother convicted of shoplifting from two supermarkets will spend the next two years behind bars. According to court reports, this morning a tearful Shirley Welcome appeared before Magistrate Dorothy Flowers where she pled guilty to two counts of theft. The fifty-four year old was picked up by police on Monday after the owners of 88 Shopping Center reported that they had video surveillance of Welcome removing three bottles of Campari from the shelves and putting them into a school bag. Once in custody, the granny was also fingered as the person who stole two bottles of Dial body wash and a shower scrub from Save-U on Friday. Welcome begged for mercy, but Magistrate Flowers ordered that she serve one year in jail for each incident. Prior to her arrest this week, Welcome had been convicted on thirteen previous occasions for theft and drug related offences.
