Excellence is Cricket Champ 2009

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re most welcome to this rush of Sports Monday. The Belize National Cricket Champion emerged yesterday at Bermudian Landing where game two of the three game championship series was staged as Excellence of Double Head went in with a one game lead over Wicked Eleven of Flower’s Bank. It’s Excellence batting first and they already have two outs when Kenny Broaster’s bat comes alive and he hits for four right here. However, after batting in the game high of sixty-five runs, Broaster’s turn finally comes to an end on this bounce from Wicked Eleven’s Darren Rhaburn who would strike for five wickets. After totaling a hundred and sixty runs for all out Excellence goes defensive as Marlon Nicholas bowls to Leonel Robinson for the infield pop up caught by Kenny Broaster. Marlon Nicholas then faces Winston Flowers and his tip is picked off by Selbert Martinez. In comes Orson Flowers to bowl and he immediately mows down veteran Ben Robinson. Against Michael Flowers, he leaves the batter looking. Orson Flowers would strike for five wickets as Excellence of Double Head holds Wicked Eleven to a hundred and sixty runs all out to pick up the W and claim the 2009 Belize National Cricket title and we say congratulations.

In the meantime, folks the other half of the Rural Cricket scene, the Belize District Cricket Association is set to conclude its championship series on Saturday at Burrell Boom so we spoke to ex-officio member, Alburn Rivero.

Alburn Rivero, Ex-Officio Member, Bze. District Cricket Assn.
“The Belize District Cricket Association is presently holding its championship games. Crooked Tree, the first game was held in Crooked Tree, whereby Crooked Tree won over Sunrise of Lords Bank. James, these are some big games, it’s a very historic game because Crooked Tree is the three time defending champion and Sunrise of Lords Bank is also a historic team, a prestigious team of the nineties and 2000. This team has done a lot of damage when it comes to prepare itself to defeat other teams. Crooked Tree though, you can’t take nothing away from them. They are a very brilliant team; the name speaks for itself. So it’s a very big match.”

Folks, we must tell you we understand the two champions could well meet in a champion of champions match up shortly so stay tuned.

In football news, today we take time out for you to meet Delmar Sutherland, one of the mot celebrated Belizean goalkeepers in the 90’, who quit football to take on cycling and just when he was about to become a serious contender in the sport at the highest levels, he was cut down by kidney failure. He first with the visiting Belize City veterans inside the Ricalde Stadium and then joins the footballers with whom he played in his hay-day, now the Corozal veterans, as both teams are united today in raising funds for Delmar’s dialysis treatment which has become vital to his survival. So we go to the fundraising match as Rogelio Barahona tries to embarrass Marvin Ottley with this push but the veteran keeper gets a toe on it. At the other end, Anthony Philips gets this look only to be thwarted by goalkeeper Oscar Campos. Corozal comes right back as Estevan Hall launches this right foot that allows Ottley to display his aerial skills. Goal number one of this ballgame comes when Orlando Vega gets away from the city defense and beats Ottley with the left foot. We’ll just have to tell Landi that pulling up the jersey is not the best way for him to celebrate his goal at this time. Some eight minutes later, the visitors tie the score when Edwin Hill puts a head on this center. One player who had a wicked flashback is Ariel Magaña, who turns on this volley that Marvin Ottley simply couldn’t catch up with and Corozal goes up 2-1. Make it 3-1 Corozal when John Ishmael Trapp fires from close range and Hagler is beaten. The Corozal boys would go on to hang on to a 3-2 big W after Elvis Cricket Crawford scored for the city in the second half.

In the meantime people, folks B.P.F.L. champion Nizhee Corozal and F.C. Belize also contributed to the Delmar project by appearing on the undercard in a nil-nil ballgame and we must give them kudos for the assistance. Delmar Sutherland will certainly appreciate all the help he can get right about now.
