Ground broken on new building at Wesley High
Official ground breaking ceremonies took place on the Wesley College campus this morning for a new school building. The single story structure will include six classrooms and represents a half million dollar investment. According to Wesley College Principal Brenda Armstrong, the student population has outgrown the institution’s infrastructure.
Brenda Armstrong, Principal, Wesley College
“This is going to help us to move out of the old and into something new. The building we are taking down is about eighty years old, it’s been there for some time. And I think it has served us over its expected period of existence and also this new building will give us the opportunity to move the first formers out of the Junior College building which then affords us that opportunity to offer a day division to our Junior College, so it benefits both our College, the High School and the Junior College.”
Mark Espat, Area Rep., Albert
“It’s a very important project for us because this is an important educational institution for the south side of Belize City. Between the high school and the junior college, they have almost eight hundred students now and if you look at the old first form building you will see that it was termite infested and so this is a significant, we hope, will be a significant improvement in the quality of education.”
Janelle Chanona
“Now I know there is a need for classrooms across the city. Are there similar plans to do other structures in those areas to alleviate that?”
Mark Espat
“Certainly Janelle. In fact SIF is working right now on an expansion to St. John’s Vianney Primary school in Port Loyola, to St. Luke’s Methodist in Lake Independence and I’m sure through the Ministry of Education, there are many other classroom expansions all over the country.”
Furnishings for the new building will be provided by the P.U.P. Albert Committee. Funds for the project come courtesy of the Government of Belize through the Commonwealth Debt initiative.
