Accident in O.W. leaves pedestrian badly injured
An early morning traffic accident in Orange Walk Town has left one woman critically injured. Thirty-seven year old Maria Santana and twenty-four year old Xandu Copo were both standing by a fence along the main road in the town when a vehicle suddenly rammed into the women. According to police, around seven forty-five this morning, a Ford Ranger being driven by forty-one year old Dale Copo was attempting to make a left turn from Queen Victoria Avenue near the fire station, but he collided into a Suzuki Sidekick driven by Michelle Garcia who was travelling in the opposite direction. The collision caused Garcia to lose control of her mini S.U.V. and the vehicle crashed into a nearby fence and pinned the pedestrians who were standing up against the structure. Santana and Copo were rushed to Northern Regional Hospital and later transferred to the K.H.M.H. Doctors worked hard to save Santana’s limbs, but due to the severity of the injury they had no choice but to amputate the young woman’s right leg. Doctors are now trying to save her other leg. Copo has been admitted to ward with both of her legs broken. And the drivers? Garcia remains hospitalised with a broken right leg while Copo escaped unharmed. His twelve year old son, who was travelling with him, received only minor injuries. At this time police are not saying who is responsible for the accident as they are still questioning the drivers.
