Unions seek boycott of Ashcroft owned business

Having failed to pressure Belize Telecommunications Limited to rehire four dismissed employees using traditional methods of marches, strike threats and go slows, union leaders are now proposing to boycott the businesses operated by B.T.L.’s majority owner, Michael Ashcroft. The call came in the form of a press release from the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, which called on its affiliates and supporters to move their savings out of the Ashcroft controlled Belize Bank Limited. The release referred to the British born naturalised Belizean as a “sinister billionaire mogul” and a “modern-day slave master.” The management of B.T.L. was criticized for “union busting” and “violation of workers rights.” The Belize Bank is by far the nation’s largest with twelve branches and annual profit in the range of forty million Belize dollars.
