Work resumes on dump; new road opens Monday

Story PictureIt appears that things may finally be working out between the Belize City Council and the Ministry of Works at the garbage dump at mile two and a half on the Western Highway. Not only has M.O.W’s heavy equipment returned to the site, clearing the roadside of all the accumulated debris, but the construction on the new road continues. In fact, Councillor Wayne Usher says next Monday the present entrance will be closed permanently.

Wayne Usher, Councillor, Public Health
“We had an excellent meeting in Belmopan, yesterday. The deputy mayor and myself went. We met with the minister of works, the chief engineer, the C.E.O. and the honourable Boots Martinez was also with us in that meeting so it was a very constructive meeting and we were happy with the end product. What is going to happen now is the bulldozer has continued to push the garbage off the road, as you can see it is very, very well cleared off the road. We are in the process of levelling out and from here we go to the new road where the gravel has already been put on some of it and they will continue doing that until the entire road has the gravel on it.”

“That we have already also taken the guard hut from this present site and transported it to the new site in anticipation of starting work on that new site.”

“We maintained that the solid waste project should get on the way as soon as possible so that we don’t have reoccurrence of this sort of situation. As a matter of fact it cannot reoccur because the new site, the new area that we’ll be using has quite a lot of land and we’ll be managing that properly so that when ever there is dumping we’ll be levelling at the same time.”

As for what will happen to old dump site, Usher says it will be levelled and eventually replaced with greenery to improve the look of the area.
