Men take victory in annual U.B. relathon

Story PictureThe story didn’t make it into Sports Monday but over the weekend students of the University of Belize participated in the twenty-ninth edition of that institution’s annual relathon. For the women, the event started out at Market Square in Belmopan while their male counterparts began their run from in front of the San Ignacio Police station. Each participant was required to run a leg of one mile and pass the baton to respective team members. In the end, the runner with the best time for the men was Wordworth Lucas, while Elsa Lucas posted the shortest time for the women. The battle of the sexes for the honour of being the first runner onto the Freetown Road campus has been a fierce rivalry and this year the men claimed victory in a time of seven hours two minutes and forty-five seconds. The women pulled up four minutes ten seconds later, but they’ve already promised to redeem themselves next year when U.B. will mark the event’s thirtieth anniversary.
