Fun weekend scheduled at Y.W.C.A.

Story PictureLooking for something cool to do this weekend? News Five’s Kendra Griffith reports the Y.W.C.A. on St. Thomas Street is the place to be.

Sonia Linares, Executive Dir., Y.W.C.A.
“It’s a day of fun at the Y.W.C.A. We always promote it as a family affair. Apart from making it an activity where we gain an income from it, but it’s also an occasion where family come out and relax and enjoy a wonderful day.”

Today the kitchen and beauty salon of the Y.W.C.A. was full of activity as the students prepared for their Annual Sports Day and Open House on Saturday.

Sonia Linares
“For the open house we have quite a number of activities planned including major sporting activities. We encourage teams out there; they can come to the Y.W.C.A. and register to participate in the basketball, volleyball, table tennis or dominoes. We will also be having swimming, but for tomorrow it will be one dollar on the hour to come and get a swim at the Y.W.C.A. swimming pool. We’ll be having quite a number of food, rice and beans, turkey dinner. We will be having different kinds of meats, roti, tamales. You name it will be at the Y.W.C.A. tomorrow.”

The festivities will continue on Sunday by the poolside when the organisation hosts “Swim for Fun.”

Amy Johnson, Peace Corps Volunteer
“We’ll have relay races for adults, high schools, youth groups, individual races for kids, for primary school kids that can come out and show their swimming skills. But more importantly, we are also going to do water safety awareness and teach kids and their parents how to stay safe when swimming in the water. So when they bathe in the river or go swimming in the sea, they will have more skills and hopefully be a bit more comfortable.”

Sonia Linares
“We encourage the community to come out and support us and also to see what the Y has to offer. Too often we go and we get funding from the businesses and from individuals and they don’t really know what it is for. They might have some idea, but tomorrow they can come in and see for themselves some of the activities that we have here, some of the programmes that we will be showcasing.”

The Y.W.C.A. Open House and Sports Day starts at nine-thirty Saturday morning. Kendra Griffith reporting for News Five.
