Revelry continues on the road to Carnival 2012

The road march for Carnival 2012 takes place on September eighth; we will have full coverage of the spectacular event with William Neal and entertainment reporter, Safiyyah. But before that, on September first this station is producing and will be airing a special Carnival Marathon which captures the rich history of the carnival. Our reporters are digging deep in our archives dusting off footage of past carnivals that document the colorful story of how the bacchanal has evolved into one of the most anticipated items on the national day calendar of activities. That’s coming up on September first. But Safiyyah was out on the town on Wednesday night for a peak at the mas camps that are being judged prior to the Road March.  This year, twelve bands are taking part, two more than in 2011.  Safiyyah caught up with them at the Mahogany Street and Fabers Road where the spirit of the carnival was on fire.

The streets of Belize City were hot and steamy on Wednesday night as night two of the mass camps went underway.

“Hey guys we are here for night two of the Mass camp and we are starting off the night with the Brand new group Belizean Jewel. So let’s join the fun and see what they’ve got going on.”

Organizer, Belizean Jewel

“Our theme for this year is Many Colors, Many Faces, One nation Belize. Many colors just simplifies that carnival is full of colors; beautiful colors, bright colors. Many faces goes with Belize because we have many faces, many races. And one nation Belize goes with the red, white, and blue.”

“Do you guys think that although it is your first year, you will be ready for carnival day?”

Organizer, Belizean Jewel

“We are definitely ready for carnival day. We have revelers that have been in carnival for a long while. We are ready.”

The next stop was to the Mass camp of junior revelers Jump Street posse. From the smallest masquerader to the bigger juniors ones the Soca spirit was definitely getting inside their bones.

“The theme for this year is Magic City. The first section is Cinderella, as you can see the castle and the coach. The second section is Sleeping Beauty. We have the spinning wheel with the wicked witch. We have Sleeping Beauty on her bed ready to be awakened by her prince. And the third section is the Walt Disney characters.  Jump Street don’t like to boast right, but we’re coming down strong. We’re coming strong. I hope everybody is ready. We will not disappoint the public.”

Our final stop for the night was once junior band turned senior band Mahogany Masqueraders.

Nadia Avila, Band Leader, Mahogany Masqueraders

“My theme for this year is celebrating the history of carnival. We weren’t allowed to take part in carnival. So what the ancestors used to do go in the back yard of the masters paint their faces, use the African print wrapped around them. Stick Fighting and mimic each other. The white section comes in with the strings, the struggles we come through, the struggle that we climbed for us to gain our emancipation; the colors depict peace and purity.  We come a long way so let us just get out there and dance in all the beautiful colors. Take it to the streets. We are free at last!”

Bye the end of the night, I was feeling the Soca vibe and decided to join in the fun. What an experience. So that’s all for now! Join me again tomorrow night when I visit the final six mass camps.
