Cops foil robbery and shoot suspect
Police believe they were at the right place at the right time to foil a robbery planned by three culprits in Belize City. But that’s not all and in the process police shot one of the men and retrieved a handgun they believe the robbers intended to use in the hold up. The incident began to unfold around three this afternoon in the vicinity of the Belize Farm Centre on North Front Street and ended up on the compound of the Yalbac Lumber Yard about two hundred feet away. It is here that Deputy Officer Commanding the Eastern Division Police Station, Superintendent Russel Blackett, says twenty year old Akeem Lord pulled the handgun at police who were patrolling the area. But the cops proved to be too quick for Lord, who was shot even before he could open fire.
Supt. Russel Blackett, Deputy Comdr., Eastern Police Division
“In the vicinity of Farm Centre situated on North Front Street, they came across a black colour tinted vehicle, a sports car. They noticed three occupants inside and stopped to conduct a search. He went down to his left side and he pulled out a black colour firearm, the officer then fired one round, hitting the suspect in the left foot between the ankle and the knee. He fell to the ground. In that motion he threw the firearm over the fence in the adjacent yard. The other officer then went over and secured the firearm until the Scenes of Crime people came on spot.”
Lord is receiving medical treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital under police guard. Police also retrieved eleven point five grams of cannabis in the vehicle. Lord and his two accomplices, Ernest Young and Anthony Maheia, will be charged jointly for Possession of a Controlled Drug. He will be additionally charged with Possession of an Unlicensed Firearm.
