St. Joseph student win bank’s art competition
A twelve year old student from Belize City has topped the yearly art competition sponsored by Atlantic Bank Limited. The winning piece was judged on originality and creativity; it interpreted the competition’s theme by way of cultural diversity. The outstanding entries made it a difficult decision for the judges, Noel Escalante, Kirkland Smith and Tarcilla Gill. Still yet, Ammon Segura of Saint Joseph Primary School won the competition. The top three winners are taking home various school supplies including a mini laptop, a Kindle Touch and cash. Duane Moody reports.

Approximately forty students from primary schools countrywide entered the second annual summer art competition sponsored by the Atlantic Bank Limited. The competition was held under the theme, “My Belizean Community; Building the Future Together.”

“As a socially responsible citizen—as part of its social outreach you might ad—sponsored for the second year a summer art competition for school children from standard four to standard six. The competition was for visual presentation: color, painting; that sort of thing. And it was to basically give an interpretation of our theme, “My Belizean Community; Building the Future Together. So that in a nutshell is what the competition was all about. There were three major criteria that we judged the submissions on: creativity, applicability or interpretation of the theme and of course originality. I must say that all the submissions were really, really of very good quality; we were very impressed. And we would like to thank all the winners that made submissions.”

Twelve year old Ammon Segura, a standard six student of St. Joseph Primary School, who has been painting for one year, won the competition with an art piece inspired by cultural diversity. Segura says it took him three days to complete the painting.

“I drew a crystal ball with people’s hands on it—the hands are different colors showing the different cultures of Belize. And I chose a crystal ball because crystal balls are used by fortune tellers and the keyboard on the side is that the people are holding the keyboard. To play the keyboard, the people must work together.”

Taking second and third place were Itzel Pott of Mary Hill R. C. School in Corozal and Adrian Bernard of St. Joseph Primary School in Belize City, respectively.

“Our second place winner was Itzel Pott from Mary Hill R.C. School in Corozal and she won a Kindle Touch and a hundred dollars worth of school supplies as well. Third place winner was Adrian Bernard and he again was from St. Joseph R.C. School here in Belize City and he won three hundred dollars cash and a hundred dollars worth of school supplies. As an added incentive for the winner, we actually transformed the winning piece into a school exercise book. I actually have that here so that will give added exposure to this art and give him added incentive to continue to practice his art.”
An exhibition of the art pieces will be held in November showcasing all the submissions over the past two years to provide exposure to the youths’ talented works. Duane Moody for News Five.
