Coast Guard Service recovers its own boat
Four members of the Belize Coast Guard Service are being questioned after a skiff went missing. The incident occurred sometime around six on Wednesday morning when the group finished patrolling the waters near San Pedro. They reportedly moored the thirty-nine foot vessel and left it unattended sometime around four on the same morning. When they returned two hours later, however, the boat was missing. Coast Guard search teams were deployed between Belize City and cayes around the San Pedro area and the boat was discovered late on Wednesday evening near Drowned Caye, some six miles east of Belize City. But its two Yamaha two hundred horsepower outboard engines, radio and two batteries, valued at around sixty two thousand dollars were missing. The Colombian vessel was confiscated several years ago and is part of the Coast Guard’s fleet of twelve. Coast Guard personnel tell News Five that they have leads and believe the culprits are local San Pedranos who were arrested for fishing violations recently. If authorities close in on the culprits, they will be charged with Theft.
