K.H.M.H. investigates death of newborn
On Tuesday we reported that Salome Busano was pointing fingers at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for the death of her jaundiced baby boy. Busano said she felt that if the doctor had not prematurely discharged her baby on Sunday, her child would still be alive today. Busano rushed the baby back to the K.H.M.H. emergency unit on Tuesday but he died the same day. News Five went looking for answers at the K.H.M.H and spoke with the Public Relations Officer, Gary Ayuso. Ayuso said that while Busano has not yet made a formal complaint with his office, the Hospital has already begun an investigation.
Gary Ayuso, Public Relations Officer, K.H.M.H.
“When any child dies of course the hospital gets concerned. We look into these things. As a matter of fact, an investigation has begun already. We are looking at all angles. In any situation where anybody in the public feels that they have a concern with the hospital, I am the public relations officer and also the complaints officer. We invite them to come in to sit down and right away we take every allegation very seriously and have an investigation ongoing. We always hear the allegations, the bad ones against us but we never hear after the final analysis that the hospital has been exonerated and that we’ve been found without fault. We have procedures and policies in place to deal with these things in the event that something like this happens.”

“So it’s not like cover up happens to save face?”
Gary Ayuso
“Oh never, never, we would never do that, not at Karl Heusner.”
Ayuso says upon the completion of the investigation, K.H.M.H. will release the findings. There is an investigation ongoing in the death of another baby at the Belmopan Hospital in which the mother claims the hospital was negligent.
