Guatemalans busted with Mayan artefacts
Two Guatemalans are in police custody tonight charged with the illegal possession of Mayan artefacts. According the police reports, around eleven o’clock this morning they stopped a green Ford Escort at a checkpoint between miles seventy-one and seventy-two on the Western Highway. A subsequent search the car, led to the discovery of a number of Mayan tools and jewellery fashioned from flint and jade. The items are estimated to be worth more than sixty thousand dollars. Because brothers Erick and Esquin Archila could not produce a licence for the items, they were promptly arrested and charged with Failure to Obtain a License to Possess Antiquities. The pieces have since been turned over to the Department of Archaeology.
